Explore one of Denver’s most distinctive historic landmarks on a guided tour of South High School, focusing on its notable landscape, mature tree collection, and exceptional Italian Renaissance Revival architecture—all of which come together to form a stunning visual ensemble.

About the event
When South High School was built in 1925, it was deliberately located next to Washington Park, considered one of the city’s most beautiful sites.
Tree expert and author of the original Tree Guide of Washington Park, Sonia John, will highlight several interesting tree species found on the 172 acre South campus but not in the park, including several Colorado Champion trees.
Kathy Corbett, architectural historian, will then offer a closer look at South High School’s Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, considered one of Denver’s best examples of the South High School’s Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, considered one of Denver’s best examples of the City Beautiful Movement. Designed by architects William E. Fisher and Arthur A. Fisher, the school features murals by renowned muralist Allen Tupper True, as well as elaborate exterior friezes and interior decorative details by noted sculptor Robert Garrison.
